Done 220,00 km. Goes to limp mode on highway on negotiating long inclines. Replaced fuel tank pump, air filter, cleaned transmission circular cable connector with electrical contact cleaner (this cured erratic transmission behavior, smooth operation returned) but limp mode still occurs. I hear a lot of groaning and hissing, but this is from the
. Tranny oil change like another 100 km in the tank. Since I changed the transmission oil and filter a month ago, (127,000 km ~80,000 miles), it is like my gasoline tank is a hundred kilometres bigger - maybe 200 for paved highway. 2005 gasoline 4.4l V8 LR3 HSE. I used to get about 16.5 litres / 100 km around town; now it is more like 15.
2) Removing the transmission pan on these is a pain. It involves loosening motor mounts, jacking up on motor and removing exhaust. I have found on LR3 and RRS, it is easier to purchase a BMW X5 metal pan, gasket, bolts and filter and just breaking the old pan and filter off. The Mechatronics is bolted in with about 10 Torx bolts.
Disco Mike. Use the old Lucas additive, not the new ATF with additive. Tim, Lucas is mainly for cleaning up sticky valves and yes it will help some internal seal but is not made as a external stop leak. Retired service manager, member of Solihull Society, SCLR, NCLR and the Santa Barbara 4Wheelers clubs.
Over time the gear selector bushing will disintegrate, causing the gear selector lever to feel loose to the touch. The gear selector lever may wobble back and forth, and without the tight fit, it may have difficulty fully engaging the gears. From a physics standpoint, the bushing helps focus the energy of the lever directly to engaging the gears.
Worst case is the solenoid has failed, but given the experience with the D3/D4 would point to a bad connection somewhere. Could be a leaking mechatronic sleeve allowing fluid into the connector, a fluid change and check of the connector would be where I'd start. Then new solenoids and valve body rebuild.
